A study to assess the use of progesterone as a potential treatment for traumatic head injuries is underway in the US.
The Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is taking part in the project after earlier findings suggested that progesterone injections could reduce the severity of long-term damage after a brain injury, reports BrainandSpinalCord.org.
It also states that the US military has devoted an increased amount of funding to brain injury research since large numbers of troops have been returning home with brain injuries over recent years.
"If the new progesterone trials prove successful, the hormone will be added to medic kits on the battlefield," the website continues.
"With any luck, progesterone will radically shift and improve treatment protocols for brain injuries."
The US Department of Defense website recently reported that scientists and doctors working for the military have developed new methods of more quickly detecting traumatic brain injuries.
Researchers at the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury have created a number of improvements in the treatment of service members with traumatic brain injuries, it revealed.
