Traumatic brain injury patients' recovery aided by arts and crafts

An occupational therapist has been aiding patients in their recovery from traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) by holding arts and crafts classes.

Ruth O'Donnell helps patients to develop their fine and gross motor skills through active participation in arts and crafts.

"The TBI patients can have great difficulty with their attention spans, but working with the kits really helps improve their concentration skills," said Ms O'Donnell.

"It's fantastic to watch their self-esteem rise with each new kit," she added.

Ms O'Donnell has worked with hospitalised veterans in St Cloud VA medical center, America, for the past five years.

She said the veterans are very grateful for the classes and, at this time of year, they enjoy making Christmas gifts for their friends and family.

In England this Christmas, people can raise money for the Brain and Spine Foundation, a charity that helps people with brain injuries, by sending e-cards to their friends and family from website everyclick.com.
