Traumatic brain injury patients 'enjoy fishing'

A group of traumatic brain injury patients have included fishing sessions as part of their rehabilitation, it has been reported.

David Antoine and Angel Gomez are former soldiers who were struck with their ailments while on duty, the Associated Press stated.

The former was hit by a roadside bomb and now has hearing loss and photosensitivity, while the latter has had to rebuild his memory after being struck in his skull with a piece of debris.

However, they have since joined a sports programme that encourages them to leave their homes and test their minds in the great outdoors.

Participants spend a week waterside, with the recreational and education aspects of the course just as important as heading back to camp with the catch of the day.

Discussing Mr Antoine's outlook on life after his accident and why the sessions are so important, his wife Lisa told the news source: "He still can't deal with it.

"He doesn't like to go anywhere, I have to drag him."

Last month, neuropsychologist at Truman Veterans Hospital Zachary Osbourn told the Missourian that servicemen and women can suffer a range of traumatic brain injuries while on duty.
