The earlier traumatic brain injury begins to heal, the better the chance the patient can enjoy a normal daily life, it has been claimed.
Dr David Durham, a neuropsychiatrist specialising in the medical condition, made this assertion prior to his presentation at the University of New Mexico on September 4th.
The discussion entitled Advances in Traumatic Brain Injury will look at the importance of categorising such injuries as either combat-sustained or non-combat sustained as this can improve the outcome of treatments.
Dr Durham explained time is always an issue with blows to the head and being able to treat it early on can help the sufferer achieve functional recovery in their daily lives.
"There is a sense of collective urgency to identify brain injuries early - it is real and it is critical," he said.
As well as being a former medical consultation for Fox News in America, Dr Durham is managing partner and director of brain injury and neurocognitive regeneration for the Mosaic Neuroscience Group in Santa Fe.
