How to prevent and treat traumatic brain injury for soldiers will be one of the topics discussed during the Military Health Research Forum in Kansas City.
The meeting, which began yesterday (September 1st), will examine the medical challenges troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan face.
Research that will be presented at the event is to include neuroprotection, rehabilitation, psychological health, substance abuse and family issues.
Brain tissue regeneration and the use of biomarkers to determine the extent of injury will be some of the areas looked at specifically for traumatic brain injury (TBI).
"Often called the signature injury of the Iraqi war, TBI can lead to a range of symptoms including headache, confusion, behavior change, memory trouble, convulsions and others," explained the organisers of the event.
Finishing tomorrow (September 3rd), a number of noted scientists will be present to discuss research issues. Attendance is by invite only and military personal must wear duty uniform.
