Traumatic brain injury 'can cause personality change'

Individuals who suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) sometimes find that it causes a change in their personality, it is reported.

A seminar exploring that very issue was held at West Virginia University in the US this week, where it was made clear that no two brain injuries are the same, reports wowktv.com.

The Center for Excellence in Disabilities (CED) at the university offers support to patients with brain injuries and experts there state that understanding the personality change is key to helping the patient to rebuild their life.

"We look at the person and ask them what their goals are, what their dreams are and look at where they've been and where they want to go and we develop an individualised plan to help them get there," the CED's TBI programme director Jeanette Motsch told the news provider.

Earlier this week, another expert spoke of the essential need to treat TBIs promptly.

Caitlin Hagan, writing for the Paging Dr Gupta blog on the CNN website, suggested that most neurologists believe there is a 60 to 90-minute window after such an injury when treatment must begin.
