Term 'concussion' leads people to underestimate severity of brain injury

When a child's brain injury is diagnosed as a concussion, parents and even doctors can underestimate its severity, Canadian researchers have said.

Researchers from McMaster University in Hamilton argue that the term concussion should be scrapped as they found that children diagnosed with concussion are released from hospital earlier than those diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries, the Canadian Press reports.

"The overall issue is concussion is often a lay term now. It's almost expected in sport. So we learned that perhaps people aren't taking it quite as seriously as perhaps it needs to be taken," lead author Carol DeMatteo told the news provider.

Ms DeMatteo suggests that the term "mild traumatic brain injury" - often shortened to MTBI - should be used instead.

Meanwhile, research in America aimed at improving outcomes for patients who suffer traumatic brain injury is to begin at the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute after public input has been received.
