A teenager who was in a major lorry accident has proved himself to be a worthy adversary to the detrimental effects of his brain injury by staging a remarkable recovery.
Shane Hasley, with the support of his parents Karen and Paul as well as the Methodist Rehabilitation Center in Jackson, Mississippi, has learned to walk on his new prosthetic leg as well as display solid motor functions, the Picayune Item revealed.
Mrs Hasley said: "Shane always wore a hat. One afternoon, I took his hat and put it over his face. I told him, 'Shane, if you don't like this then you need to do something about it.'"
Her son then grabbed the hat and put it back on his head, signalling a huge breakthrough in the mental barriers which a brain injury naturally heralds.
Commenting on his future, Shane said: "When this is all over, I want to become a professional fisherman or a game warden."
It follows the great news that Paige Thomas, a 13-year-old girl from the east Midlands with a brain injury from a road accident, has recovered and has returned home for the new year after her mother fought to keep her life support machine on.
