Many traumatic brain injuries that occur in a sporting context are preventable, it is claimed.
According to an article by Gail Larkin for silive.com, "most experts" agree that the majority of sports injuries that end up in hospital emergency departments could have been prevented.
"Not using or misusing safety equipment accounts for many of these injuries," the article continued.
Sports-related safety equipment has become more sophisticated over the years as a direct result of experts learning the patterns of specific injuries in certain activities, Ms Larkin suggested.
In particular, she pointed out that better safety helmets have been developed with the use of materials that are designed to absorb some of the force that would otherwise impact the head directly.
A separate report recently stated that helmets can significantly lower the risk of a head injury for children taking part in physical activities such as cycling.
Writing for WauwatosaNow, Lisa Klindt Simpson of Children's Hospital Wisconsin suggested that kids' helmets can reduce the risk of a severe brain injury by 88 per cent.
