A number of snowboarding professionals have spoken out about the importance of wearing a helmet while taking part in the sport after an Olympic hopeful sustained a brain injury.
Kevin Pearce suffered a serious brain injury on December 31st while training at Park City, Utah.
He struck his head on the side of the park's half-pipe and was taken to hospital in Salt Lake City.
After hearing the news, snowboarder Ryan Boisvert told the Union Leader that, from now on, he will ensure he always wears a helmet when training.
"I don't want to end up with a concussion. The ground is hard as cement when you hit at more than 20 miles per hour," said Mr Boisvert.
Mr Pearce was wearing a helmet when his accident occurred but, had he not been, his injuries could have been a lot worse.
Snowboard instructor Austin Fox told the newspaper that Mr Pearce's accident served as a reminder of how important it is to keep a helmet on when taking part in the winter sport.
