Retired surgeon seeks funding for brain injury prevention research

A retired heart surgeon may have found a way of reducing brain injury that can result from concussions received during contact sports.

Dr W Dudley Johnson, from Milwaukee, America, told Jason Cole from Yahoo! Sports that he developed his idea from treatments that are used to reduce the effects of strokes.

"The whole concept is to change the body so the response to brain injury is less traumatic," said Dr Johnson.

He explained to Cole that it was a "prophylactic measure" but only requires everyday, over-the-counter, natural products that can be found in the supermarket, such as fish oil.

Dr Johnson has the backing of three people that have strong ties to the American football league, one of which, Al Toon, had his career cut short by numerous concussions, Cole reported. He is now seeking financial support to complete further research.

According to the Brain Injury Association of America, 1.4 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury each year in the United States. These can be caused by a number of things including sporting injuries, road accidents and assaults.
