Progesterone could help to treat brain injury and other central nervous system injuries recent research suggests.
Dr Donald G Stein and Dr Iqbal Sayeed of Emory University claim that the hormone improves neuronal survival and function after traumatic brain injuries and that it should be clinically used, Medpagetoday.com reports.
According to the website, an article appearing in the January 2010 issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology, states: "There are now about 100 preclinical studies from laboratories in the US and abroad showing the beneficial effects of progesterone treatment in a number of central nervous system injury models."
The two doctors also highlighted two clinical trials, one from America and one from China, which showed that function in patients with traumatic brain injury was improved more by a short course of progesterone than placebo.
Someone that could benefit from this treatment is Daniel Stafford, who suffered a brain injury when he was hit by a car six weeks ago. Look Local reported members of the 13-year-old's favourite football team - Sheffield Wednesday - visited him in hospital earlier this month and gave him Christmas presents.
