A professional fighter in the US has dropped dead after an impact caused a brain injury that doctors claim left the organ fragile.
Original Toughman Contest competitor Nathan Johnson died of second-impact syndrome, according to the fight doctor at the event, reports News OK.
Dr Larry Lovelace told the newspaper that this kind of injury often occurs when an earlier injury is exacerbated by a subsequent impact.
He said: "As it turns out, though, [on] Saturday morning he did complain (to his parents) of a bit of a headache and a shooting star sensation in his right eye.
"He didn't tell us about it. I think he was afraid that he'd be disqualified."
There is still a lack of understanding about certain aspects of brain injury treatment.
In a bid to foster greater medical sector interest, NeuroRehabilitation committed to publishing a special issue dedicated to hypoxic-ischemic brain injury earlier this month.
