A major clinical trial of an oxygen-based treatment for patients with brain injuries is set to be launched in the US.
Hyberbaric oxygen therapy will be put to the test in the study which is being sponsored by a non-profit group called the International Hyperbaric Medical Foundation.
The treatment is based on the idea of regenerating brain tissue biologically as opposed to simply treating the symptoms with drugs.
It is already approved by the Federal Drug Administration for the treatment of several other conditions and has long been used as a treatment for compression sickness or "the bends".
The foundation is now on the lookout for up to 1,000 volunteers with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury, and also post-traumatic stress disorder, to take part in the nationwide study.
It is currently Brain Injury Awareness Month in the US, which aims to spread knowledge among the public about the issues relating to brain injuries.
