Physical therapists are advising brain injury sufferers to play on the Nintendo Wii as part of their rehabilitation programme.
Website BrainAndSpinalCord.org reported that the simplicities involved in playing the Wii, such as using the basic functions on the control pad and the body movements required to play the games, help players to recover their motor skills in a more interesting and enjoyable way.
"Wii-hab" can also assist with recovery of regular motion of the fingers and arms, according to the website.
Some of the games available for the console also require a level of physical activity, which enhances general health of those both with and without brain injuries.
The website said that Wii-hab is also being used to help people who have suffered a stroke, combat wounds and those who have Parkinson's disease.
According to the website, in America, 80,000 people per year will experience long-term disabilities as a result of their brain injury.
