A new technology developed in the US aims to minimise brain injury after stroke.
NeuroInterventions has created a treatment device that could speed up the restoration of blood flow and reduce risk of sustaining brain damage.
According to the company, a range of products has been conceived that can dissolve or extract clots or deliver medication.
Michele Migliuolo is president and chief operating officer of NeuroInterventions and said during treatment for a stroke, every second is precious as brain function decreases with time.
"Even after a patient reaches a hospital, it can take as long as 60 minutes just to introduce a conventional catheter through the femoral artery and steer it to the site," he explained.
Dr Migliuolo added that the technology will help patients as well as doctors and hospitals by providing shorter and more effective solutions. It will also assist in reducing recovery times, he said.
About 110,000 people in the UK suffer from a stroke ever year, NHS figures state.
