A man who sustained a severe brain injury after a car accident has been called a "miracle" by his mother after recovering.
Sam Decker, 29, told the Lincoln Journal Star about how doctors told him the diffuse axonal damage across his brain usually causes the sufferer to fall into a coma. Nine out of ten do not wake up and those who do are often impaired significantly.
However, he said being warned about what he could not do made him want to try even harder to regain a normal life.
As a sketching and drawing enthusiast, Mr Decker worked to get back the dexterity he lost in his hand - and months later came second place in a national competition.
But while his mum praised his efforts, he described how his short-term memory took a big hit.
"I work [in] construction and I leave tools lying around sometimes," Mr Decker explained. "But I'm slowly getting better. I'm finding new ways to send off triggers in my brain."
His story is not the only one to hit the headlines this month Danny Hoffman from Palm Springs, US, also suffered a diffuse axonal brain injury but is now talking, eating and reading, the Desert Sun relayed.
