A new report has claimed that the loss of physical and psychological functions in the brain is not related to injury to the organ.
The research by Rainer Scheid and D Yves von Cramon, published in the Deutsches Arzteblatt International journal, stated that there were no convincing correlations between patients' condition and their performance in neuropsychological tests.
The researchers looked at 320 patients who were treated between 1996 and 2007 at the Cognitive Neurology Outpatient Clinic at the University of Leipzig.
Both scientists looked at whether imaging, clinical and neuropsychological findings were correlated in head injury patients, with magnetic resonance imaging showing no change in 49 patients.
One finding did show that 15 per cent of patients suffered from posttraumatic epilepsy, which the researchers linked with brain contusions.
Recent research from the Universite de Montreal School of Optometry published in the journal Brain Injury has linked brain injuries to loss of smell or taste.
