One of the US' best snowboarders was hit by a massive brain injury at a recent competition in Utah.
Kevin Pearce, who is one of very few sportsmen in his field to have beaten world champion Shaun White in a head-to-head face-off, hit his head on the side of a halfpipe after attempting to pull off a twisting double back flip.
Holly Ledyarrd, the doctor looking after the snowboarding legend in Salt Lake City after being struck down at the Park City resort, revealed that he is to undergo surgery to lessen the long-term impact of his brain injury.
She explained: "The focus over the next week will be watching for any swelling in his brain and keeping his brain pressure normal. Kevin has a long recovery ahead of him."
It was well-believed that Pearce would be selected for the US Winter Olympics team for this year's competition in Vancouver.
Pearce, who is only 21, claimed two silvers and a bronze in the Aspen X Games in 2008.
