The number of children sustaining head injuries while skiing and snowboarding could soon be reduced in California if a proposed law is passed.
State Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) wants it to be mandatory for those under the age of 18 to wear a helmet while on the slopes of the American state.
"With this legislation, we can significantly reduce instances of traumatic brain injury or death for such a vulnerable population," the San Francisco Chronicle reported Mr Yee as saying.
According to Mr Yee, half of all skiing deaths are caused by head injury but that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by between 29 and 56 per cent.
A broad spectrum of research is currently being conducted to help those that have suffered from traumatic brain injuries.
One example is a study soon to begin in UC Davis Medical Center's level-one trauma centre in the US, which will test the effectiveness of a drug therapy in minimising death and disability that results from traumatic brain injury.
