Making sure that a child wears a helmet while doing physical activity such as riding a bike can reduce the risk of a severe brain injury by 88 per cent, it is claimed.
It can also lower the risk of a head injury in general by 85 per cent, stated Lisa Klindt Simpson of Children's Hospital Wisconsin, in an article for WauwatosaNow.
Ms Simpson, who is the coordinator of the Safe Kids Southeast Wisconsin Coalition, pointed out that once a child is in the habit of wearing a helmet, he or she will feel something is missing if riding without it.
"Helmets are important for a number of activities, but especially so for biking," she continued.
"Bikes are more than just toys. They are associated with more childhood injuries than any consumer product except the automobile."
Brain injuries have been high up the news agenda in the US over recent weeks, as March has been Brain Injury Awareness Month across the country.
The Brain Injury Association of America and its network of 44 chartered state affiliates has used the month to launch a year-long education and advocacy campaign entitled A Concussion is a Brain Injury. Get the Facts.
