Hyperbaric oxygen therapy 'improves' brain injury recovery

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves recovery in patients with traumatic brain injury, research has shown.

The research, published recently in the Journal of Neurosurgery, studied patients over five years at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

When a traumatic brain injury occurs, blood flow and, therefore, oxygen delivery can be compromised, which can lead to irreversible damage.

Undamaged brains produce energy to keep cells and tissue healthy but when a brain is damaged help is required.

Neurosurgeon Gaylan Rockswold, one of the study's authors, said: "The results indicate that hyperbaric oxygen treatment was found to significantly enhance the brain's energy production and reduce intracranial pressure without any toxic effects on the brain or lungs from too much oxygen."

Last month, research was published indicating that the hormone progesterone could be used to treat brain injury and other injuries to the central nervous system.

Medpagetoday.com reported that researchers at Emory University found the hormone improved neuronal survival and function.
