Practice guidelines for the treatment of mild traumatic brain injuries have been created by a panel of experts.
The VA/Department of Defense guidelines use tables and step-by-step information on the identification, treatment, and management of mild traumatic brain injuries in those on military duty, medscape.com reports.
Speaking to the website, Dr Cifu, chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, said: "Concussions have been present in every war since the Civil War.
"Shells exploding, young men travelling very quickly and stopping very quickly, being thrown by bullets and explosions - that's what causes brain injury."
The guidelines are published in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development.
They state that, in most cases, soldiers who sustain a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury should return to work or duty as soon as possible but should resume activity gradually.
Recent research by Emory University has suggested that progesterone could help to treat brain injury and other central nervous system injuries, medpagetoday.com reported yesterday.
