Brain injury charity Headway held its annual awards ceremony in London last night and an ex-royal marine, who suffered a brain injury while in Afghanistan, was awarded Achiever of the Year.
Thomas Birch won the award having learned to walk and talk again after his injury, which was sustained when a Landrover he was in fell off a 100ft cliff in Afghanistan.
Speaking to the Derby Telegraph about the award, Mr Birch said: "I feel over the moon. I did not find out until today that I had won.
"It feels so good to get this after the last few years."
Peter McCabe, chief executive of Headway, told the newspaper that he thinks Thomas is an "incredible" young man and hailed the way in which the 21-year-old has rebuilt his life as "nothing short of inspirational".
Last month, Mr Birch won the Student of the Year award at the Association of Colleges annual conference.
