A hit to the head which could cause brain injury is dangerous because people cannot see the damage straight away, it has been asserted.
Dylan Mello experienced three concussions in one year as a result of playing hockey and football, explained the East Bay RI.
The mother of the 17-year-old told the news provider nobody realised the extent of the brain injury, adding if they had, he would not have been allowed to play sport.
"Everyone blames themselves in hindsight for not getting treatment earlier, but the injury is difficult to detect," Mrs Mello was quoted as saying.
"A concussion is worse than a broken limb, because you can't see the damage."
She concluded by noting even if a person does not become unconscious, they can still suffer from concussion.
Earlier this week, scientists at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Nationwide Children's Hospital reported 15 per cent of sport-related injuries at school are severe.
