Cyclist with brain injury in Paralympic championships

Paralympic cyclist Darren Kenny will take part in the CP3 1km and 3km pursuit events in the UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships this weekend.

Each cyclist in CP3 events has an acquired or congenital brain injury that affects their motor control.

The championships are taking place at Manchester Velodrome from Friday November 6th to Sunday November 8th.

Kenny, a gold medal winning, world record-holding member of the GB Paralympic and David Mellor Cycles Teams, suffered from acquired brain injury and partial lesions of the spine at the age of 18.

He has broken five world records including the 1km Time Trial at the IPC Cycling World Championships in Switzerland in September 2006.

Speaking to road.cc, GB Para-Cycling lead coach Chris Furber said that these championships form the first step in the Paralympic cycling team's preparation for London 2012.

"From 2010 we will be implementing what we have learnt in 2009 to really hone in on our performance ahead of London 2012 Paralympic Games," he said.
