A woman who suffered a brain injury died after the ambulance that was sent to reach her was diverted to another case, it has emerged.
Paramedics were called to Bonita Mason's house in Suffolk in May last year after she fell down a flight of stairs, fracturing her skull and suffering severe brain injuries.
The ambulance sent to her aid took 38 minutes to reach her, however, after it was sent to help a woman who had fallen over in the street, according to the East Anglia Daily Times.
At an inquest into her death, the paper reports that a neurosurgeon said that it was one of the worst injuries he had seen for a stair fall.
Brain injury charity Headway recently highlighted the lack of information that accident and emergency wards provide for people who suffer brain injuries during its Action for Brain Injury Week campaign.
A recent survey conducted by the University of Warwick for the charity found that 92 per cent of hospitals do not offer the correct information on brain injuries.
