Brain injury survivor tells his story

A man who suffered a brain injury has told his story of how he has come to terms with awaking from a coma to discover his wife had died.

Daniel Coe and his wife were hit by a car as they went to the rescue of another motorist. The accident killed Mrs Coe and left Daniel with severe brain injuries.

Upon awaking from a three-month coma, he was told his wife had been killed and fell into a deep depression, he told Savannah Morning News.

He said: "We all need purpose in our lives and I had no purpose. Or I didn't think I did.

"The positive side is I see things now I never saw in the past. Now I see the needs of people."

A recent study from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle found a link between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and depression.

The study found that a majority of TBI patients suffered some form of major depression following their injury.
