People with brain injuries need to experience the outdoors and not just be stuck in "sterile" rehabilitation centres, the father of a brain injury sufferer has said.
Tim Johns' son sustained a brain injury six years ago while he was snowboarding in Colorado, the Associated Press reports.
Mr Johns felt that there was a lack of facilities available to aid in his son's recovery so he is developing his own Brain Injury Adventure Camp in Henderson County, California, to help others with the problem.
Speaking to the news provider, Mr Johns said that people with brain injuries should not just be treated in "sterile environments".
"They need to get outside and smell what we smell and touch these things and create relationships," Mr Johns added.
Work has begun to transform 42 acres of unused farm land into the specialist camp, which, among other features, will include a tricycle track and a rope climbing course.
Recent research, published in the Journal of Neurosurgery, found that Hyperbaric oxygen therapy could help to cure people with traumatic brain injury as it improves the brain's energy production.
