People in the north Lincolnshire area who suffer from brain injuries could be receiving better care than that which is currently on offer, an expert has warned.
Dr Abayomi Salawai said that both the type of equipment on offer and the procedures in place could be improved, reports the Scunthorpe Telegraph.
During an hour-long presentation at Scunthorpe General Hospital, Dr Salawai said: "Patients locally do not have access to some very specialist equipment which can help with rehabilitation. For example, a system which supports weight while the patient walks on a treadmill so they can regain the movements of walking."
The newspaper states that he also referred to a problem of delays that sometimes occur when patients are transferred to the hospital in Goole to continue their rehabilitation.
Experts in the US, meanwhile, are set to launch a clinical trial to assess the efficacy and safety of an oxygen-based treatment for people with brain injuries.
A non-profit group called the International Hyperbaric Medical Foundation is sponsoring the trial of the therapy, which is based on the idea of regenerating brain tissue biologically as opposed to simply treating the symptoms with drugs.
