A man who suffered a brain injury that left him clinically dead for almost half a minute has been nominated for a national education award.
Mickleby resident Sergeant Richard Leak, 36, served in the Gulf, Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Iraq, but was training in Aldershot when a series of seizures caused his heart to stop.
His brain was deprived of oxygen and he had to stay five days in hospital before being transferred home, the Whitby Gazette reports.
Yet progress with Learndirect led Sgt Leak to win a National Skills for Work award, even though the injury left him with memory gaps and the loss of ability to walk or talk.
"My confidence was shot to bits," he told the newspaper, likening the incident to that of a stroke. "I will succeed and I will get back to where I was before, no doubt about that."
About 111,000 people in the UK each year have a stroke, NHS statistics show.
They are the largest cause of adult disability, due to the brain injuries they cause.
