Brain injury lecture to assess 'regaining consciousness' research

Leading neurological experts are set to discuss advances in neuroimaging and the impact this will have on assessing traumatic brain injury next month.

The 14th annual Swartz Foundation Mind/Brain Lecture at Stony Brook University will consider the recovery of consciousness following a brain injury specifically.

Eleven centres dedicated to theoretical neuroscience are supported by the Swartz Foundation, although major advances in neuroscience have left a gap in experts' understanding of the effect that consciousness following traumatic brain injury has on patients.

Nicholas Schiff, director of the laboratory of cognitive neuromodulation at the Weill Medical Center in New York, will host the free lecture, taking place on March 15th.

Commenting ahead of the event, Jerry Swartz said: "Theoretical brain science research, as supported by the Swartz Foundation, goes hand-in-hand with the groundbreaking clinical work of Dr Schiff.

"I expect great strides to be made in the future in the related areas of medical technology and neurotechnology, as we increase our understanding of the basic principles and mechanisms of consciousness."

The scheduling of the lecture comes after researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine published evidence suggesting that mild traumatic brain injury may be more damaging than medical experts believe.
