'Brain injury crisis' in high-impact sports

There is a brain injury "crisis" occurring in high-impact sports, it has been claimed.

Boston University School of Medicine's (BUSM) Centre or the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy claimed these types of head traumas are a serious problem, adding the dementia they can lead to is preventable.

It made the comments after announcing the results of tests on former college football star Mike Borich, who passed away at the age of 42.

The research marks the first time a non-professional has been found with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Commenting, a director from BUSM claimed brain injury is not just an issue for sports, but also a national problem.

Meanwhile, co-director and clinical professor of neurosurgery Robert Cantu added: "Young men and women are voluntarily exposing themselves to repetitive brain trauma without full knowledge of the potential consequences."

Last month, BUSM announced three American football players had agreed to donate tissue upon their death to allow researchers to gain a better understanding of head traumas.
