Brain injured man publishes memoirs about recovery

A young man with a brain injury has published a collection of memoirs titled An Uncharted Desert Isle.

Rick Fernandez acquired a brain injury during a car accident when he was 18 years-old and his memoirs detail his road to recovery and the obstacles he has faced along the way.

Mr Fernandez was in a coma for 67 days and was only released from hospital after four months of rehabilitation.

He writes that brain damage has taught him a lot and that his disability has separated him from many things that, before, would have depressed him.

"I was more disabled before my head injury. Disability gave me the elusive goal of making myself whole once more. It is fun and rewarding to thwart something as powerful as a severe head injury," he explained.

Mr Fernandez details how he does not focus on what he has lost and that rehabilitation has allowed him to work on activities and emotions that are more productive.

According to Headway, the brain injury charity, rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury is often a slow process but the greatest visible progress occurs in the first six months after the injury occurs.
