Brain Injury Awareness Month is taking place in the US during March to spread knowledge among the public through a series of events.
The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) and its network of 44 chartered state affiliates has used the month to launch a year-long education and advocacy campaign entitled A Concussion is a Brain Injury. Get the Facts.
A number of radio and print public service announcements were made earlier this month to initiate the campaign, as part of ongoing efforts to train coaches and protect young athletes.
The organisation stated: "BIAA believes coaches of every school athletic team and every extra-curricular athletic activity should be trained to recognise the signs and symptoms of brain injury, including concussions and second impact syndrome."
It is also pushing for legislation to stipulate that young athletes who appear to have sustained a concussion should have written authorisation by a healthcare professional before returning to play.
BIAA was founded in 1980 and is the leading national organisation serving and representing individuals, families and professionals in the US affected by a life-altering traumatic brain injury.
