Acquired brain injury services 'under review by NHS'

NHS chiefs are conducting a review of services for people with acquired brain injuries in the Worcestershire area.

An NHS Worcestershire spokesperson said the funding of the Acquired Brain Injury Unit in Evesham in future is being considered as part of the review, reports Worcester News.

Just earlier this week, the Evesham Journal stated that the centre is currently looking to plug a £45,000 funding gap in order to maintain the services it provides to patients.

According to Worcester News, the NHS Worcestershire spokesperson has cautioned against "unrealistic expectations" about the outcome of the review, in light of the economic climate.

He added: "The statutory responsibility of NHS Worcestershire is to commission health services, not adult education services, and funding could only be considered with respect to any part of the service which addresses clinically identified health needs."

The newspaper went on to quote local MP Peter Luff as saying he is encouraged that the review is taking place.
