Acquired brain injury patients will be able to take advantage of specialist care at a new rehabilitation centre, it has been reported.
Wearside unit Sycamore Lodge is to be extended to offer further services to people with head traumas and other illnesses such as Parkinson's disease, the Sunderland Echo relayed.
The local council rubber-stamped plans for the improvement works, with Labour councillor Graeme Miller quoted as saying it is a "fantastic" resource.
Catering facilities, a gymnasium and swimming areas are to be built at the existing site, with beds extended to accommodate the long-term sick.
Discussing the work of the centre with the news source, owner Linda Wrout remarked: "We aim to either rehabilitate them so that they are well enough to go home, or maintain their health to the best standard we can."
In related news, Sue Ryder Care recently raised £12,675 at a charity event in Manchester.
Its centres care for people with brain injuries, along with those struck down by ailments such as Huntingdon's disease.
