Mild brain injuries can be the result of a fall, particularly among older generations.
An unexpected blow to the head can damage the nervous system tissue, with bleeding often the result, Ann Butenas writes on empowher.com.
This can get more serious when blood clots begin to form under the skull, which compresses the underlying brain tissue.
People worried they may have suffered a brain injury, Ms Butenas writes, should look for symptoms such as bleeding from the wound, ears, nose or around the eyes, while bruising may be present under the ears or under the eyes.
"The patient may act confused or even have convulsions. Problems with balance may ensue. A headache may occur," the expert noted.
"They may even become restless or irritable and experience some visual disturbances."
People should also be aware that symptoms can take as long as 24 hours to appear.
A recent study by the National Institutes of Health in the US discovered that 85 per cent of brain injury patients do not receive any treatment associated with the long term difficulties caused by their injury.
