Some 15 per cent of all sport-related injuries in school are categorised as severe which could include concussion, along with brain injury.
This is the finding of investigators at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
In the report, which was published in the September issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the scientists highlighted athletes taking part in wrestling or American football were the most likely to experience severe bodily damage.
Co-author of the study Dr Dawn Comstock remarked further examinations into the area are required in order to develop ways to lower the number of such incidents.
"Severe injuries negatively affect athletes' health and often place an increased burden on the health care system," she said.
Meanwhile, Professor Ning Zhang from the Clemson University recently discussed an injectible gel that could be used to help sufferers of traumatic brain injury.
She announced the treatment could be ready to test on humans in three years' time.
