Brain injuries or any trauma to the head requires immediate attention to diagnose the severity of the injury. Head injuries differ from brain trauma if the wound is superficial; however, professional medical treatment is imperative to properly evaluate the condition. In contrast, traumatic brain injuries, commonly referred to as TBI may affect not only the brain tissue but the central nervous system and other regulatory systems in the body. If both exterior damage to the skull and internal damage to the brain occur, a full diagnosis may prevent severe consequences.
Concussions: A minor concussion is considered to be a less serious form of head injury and the most common. The symptoms could include a short loss of consciousness. Normally these cases do not include fractures to the skull and result from a lesser force or trauma to the brain or head. Concussions may require hospitalisation if inflammation is present in the brain and repeated concussions could lead to permanent damage.
Cerebral Contusions: A smaller percentage of head injuries result in damage to brain tissue resulting in a serious condition referred to as a cerebral contusion. When the brain tissue is bruised or blood vessels are damaged, deterioration of the brain may occur. This condition may also have an effect on the nervous system and other normal body functions.
Coma: In extreme cases a complete loss of consciousness may occur from a brain injury. A comatose person requires significant medical treatment and possibly intensive care unit admission. They may or may not completely recover from this condition.
Many brain injuries occur from an external force. Over half of all reported TBI’s occur from accidents that involve bicycles and motorcycles. Another leading cause revolves around car accidents from both the passengers and pedestrian contact. Other violent acts including firearm usage and child abuse plus sports related injuries make up the remaining smaller percentage of TBIs.
As soon as physically possible, any questions regarding the legal implications of both the injured and the responsible parties should be investigated. Head injuries are often ignored because symptoms appear minor. Unfortunately, serious complications may develop if left untreated. The advice of a professional legal team along with a professional medical staff ensures that victims of traumatic brain injuries receive full care and support.
